EM resident Sarah Sutro in “Dark Matter” at the Berkshire Art Museum through September

“Dark Matter” is currently at BAM (Berkshire Art Museum) 159 E Main St., North Adams, MA . Dark Matter is part of the larger show, “Not a Pretty Picture,” up through September at BAM, Summer hours: Weds-Sun 12-5; Fall hours Sat+Sun 12-5.
These paintings come from a series I did in the 1990’s, where a balanced neutral range of dark colors was achieved through acrylic washes, impasto, oil, wax and selective, intuitive scraping. Layers of overlapping build an overall pattern; sketchy landscape emerges and disappears, a sense of order is alluded to, then lost, creating a giant web of sense impression, or sound. Much of this comes out of nature, like the insistent drum of rain on a roof, the loud drill of cicadas in twilight in Asia, low cricket hum in a late summer field, all suggesting processes in nature.
